Although its title and size specification imply that the present lot is merely a smaller version of Barye's 10½ inch model of the same name, Cheval demi-sang, tête levée, réduction actually differs quite significantly from its larger namesake. It seems likely the model is that which was first offered in Besse's 1844 catalogue as Petit cheval. The modèle offered here was acquired at the Atelier sale by Goupil and subsequently edited by Barbedienne until the mid-1920s.
