Lot Essay

Although only offered in his final catalogues, Barye's Ours terrassé par des chiens de grand race, and the similar model, Ours fuyant des chiens, both date from around 1834-8 and relate closely to Chasse à l'ours, one of the five large hunt groups for the Orléans surtout de table. Poletti and Richarme estimate the number of lifetime épreuves for each model to be less than twenty. Both models were edited posthumously by Brame.

Another cast of this model was sold in these rooms, 15 February 1995, lot 168 ($20,700).
