Lot Essay

The two Basset assis models, one with short-haired coat, the other with long (see following lot), were conceived by Barye as a pair and first offered as such in Besse's 1844 catalogue. Neither model was edited in great number during Barye's lifetime, and at the 1876 Atelier sale, the bronze and plaster modèles for each were acquired by Goupil and subsequently edited with great success by Barbedienne.
