Between 1836 and 1840, Barye modelled two versions of Charles VII (1403-1461), the main difference between them being the addition in the second model of a laurel victory garland on the head of the young king. After 1880, Romantic equestrian subjects were no longer in vogue, and although the model was offered by Barbedienne until the mid-1920s, it is likely that lifetime épreuves actually outnumbered those cast posthumously. Another cast of this model was sold Sotheby's New York, The Marshall B. Coyne Collection, 6 June 2001, lot 303 ($11,400).
