Lot Essay
Dating from the 1830s, Kevel was first offered in Barye's 1857-8 catalogue. After 1876, the model was edited by Barbedienne. The Atelier sale lot number (637) to its underside, and comparison with the illustrated master-bronze in the 1927 Zoubaloff catalogue, irrefutably confirm this épreuve of Kevel to be the modèle. This contradicts the work's entry in Poletti & Richarme's catalogue raisonné, where it is stated that the modèle was acquired by Granville at the Zoubaloff sale and subsequently bequeathed to the musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon.
