Mid to late 19th century, impressed B, signed G. Kranas
Finely painted after Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy-Trioson with a missionary and the virgin Atala's beloved companion attending her at grave side, the grotto wall inscribed 'J'ai passe comme la fleur. J'ai se che comme cherbe des champs.'

Lot Essay

This image was inspired by François Renée Chateaubriand's Romantic novel of 1801.

Girodet first showed 'The Burial of Atala' at the Paris Solon of 1808 and then exhibited it again in 1814, receiving acclaim both times. It has since become a landmark in art-historical studies, exemplifying the transition from Neoclassicism to Romanticism in the early 1800'.
