Lot Essay

Jeannest (c. 1813-1857), son of a French bronzier, was employed by Minton in London from the mid to late 1840s as a sculptor and modelling instructor. Around 1850, he joined Messrs. Elkington, but continued to freelance for Minton. Jeannest's 'Piper' and 'Listener' candelabra were shown at the London International Exhibition of 1862. See Paul Atterbury with Maureen Batkin, The Parian Phenomenon, Somerset, 1989, p. 108, fig. 336 and 337 for an achival drawing of both models and p. 120, fig. 423 and 427 for two black and white archival images of Bacchus and Ondine on similar pedestals.
