Lot Essay

This freely painted example is a rarity among Solon's masterpieces. One other is recorded in the seminal exhibition catalogue produced by The Victorian & Albert Museum and Thomas Goode & Co. Ltd., Minton 1798-1910, London 1976, K21. Here listed is a circular earthenware plate painted with a portrait of a baby inscribed PETIT LEON AVRIL 72. This early portrait of his son is similarly signed and dated on the reverse and labelled in French as a gift to his dear sisters - City Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke (28 P 51).
