Lot Essay

The scene depicted in this fine micromosaic is after an original pair of medallions of Day and Night excecuted in 1840 by the celebrated Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorwaldsen. The popular theme was also reproduced in porcelain in the 19th century. The 'enormous success' of the work helped to spread the fame of Thorwaldsen's work.
