The company was started by Charles Christofle (d.1863) in 1831 and became perhaps the most prolific firm of silver and electroplate manufacturers in France, receiving patronage from Napoleon III. Its plating industry was boosted by the buying of the French rights to Elkington's patent in 1842. After the death of Charles, the company was continued by his family and is still active today.
