The dial with Roman and Arabic chapters and twin-train movement, inscribed Reigat A Paris, within a barrel-form clockcase surmounted by a military trophy and flanked by banners, above an arcaded 'prison' and courtyard with soldiers and a courting couple, on a white marble guilloche-moulded base

Lot Essay

The present clock is after a rare 18th century model and depicts a scene from the opera "Le Deserteur" by Michel-Jean Sedaine (d.1797). The view shows the deserter peering out from behind a grated door shortly before his capture by the soldiers.
