PABLO PICASSO
This lot is offered without reserve. Picasso was not the first twentieth century printmaker to come under the influence of Cranach. The German expressionists also admired Cranach's anti-naturalism and primitivism as did the surrealists. The immediate stimulus for the variations on Cranach subjects may have been supplied by the preparation of a book on Cranach's nudes by Christian Zervos which was published in 1950.
