Probably Western Iran or Iraq, circa late 12th century
Sura al-baqara (II), vv. 218-9, manuscript on paper, 5ll. of bold black muhaqqaq outlined with gold, vocalisation in red, blue and gold, letter pointing in green, gold roundels between verses with the word aya in kufic, slight staining
Folio 13½ x 10¼in. (34.8 x 26cm.)

Lot Essay

This folio is quite likely to originate from a Qur'an of which the final bifolium of juz II was sold at Sotheby's, 16 October, 1996, lot 4. This had a colophon dated AH 579/1183 AD.
