Lot Essay

The inscription translates:
"Verily, the heart of the generous remains noble, even if his circumstances change. Well being".

Bowls with black kufic on white grounds are well known, such as that seen in lots 5 and 6. The Eastern kufic legibly containing an aphorism seen on the present bowl, indicating a date in the 11th century, is however considerably rarer. The dense interlaced black designs seen in the bands of decoration outside the script also link this bowl to the "'atiqq" group represented by the preceding lot. As with that piece, the present bowl is unusual in the addition of a colour to the normally monochrome decoration.
