Manuscript on paper, 257ff. with 14ll. of black naskh between gold rules, gold rosettes between verses, red Persian interlinear translation, sura headings in gold within illuminated panels, opening finely illuminated bifolio, similarly illuminated marginal medallions marking juz divisions, other marginal medallions containing black shikasteh commentary, final folio with colophon signed Muhammad 'Ali ibn Muhammad Sadiq Al-Isfahani and dated 1218, good condition in original floral lacquer binding, doublures rather damaged

Lot Essay

Three other copies of the Qur'an and two other religious books are recorded copied by Muhammad 'Ali between 1208-35/1793-1820.

The colophon of the Persian translation states that it was commissioned by Muhammad Ibrahim. The marginal commentary states that it was commisioned by Hajj (Muhammad Ibrahim?) and was copied by 'Ali Asgar Hamadani on 12 Ramadan 1220 4 December 1805. Other works by this scribe are in the Gulistan Palace library, and a Qur'an copied by him was sold in these rooms, October 2000, lot 20.
