A LARGE CARVED WOOD QUR'AN STAND
Probably Delhi workshop, North India, dated 1891 AD
Of typical folding X form with arched lower sections forming legs, the exterior carved in relief with a central panel of florets within cusped arches, the centres inlaid with brass studs, outer band of floral meander framed by brass bands, the lower section with similar floral meander and engraved brass bands, the inside engraved with a dated inscription near the top

Lot Essay

The inscription near the top of the inside of one of the faces reads:
"'Abd al-Rahman, the governor of the section of collecting (public revenue) of Ghazi Abad..., the year 1891". The town of Ghaziabad is situated a few miles east of Delhi.
