Lot Essay

A number of bottles of the same form as the present example are known, the vast majority of which are in colourless glass (Jenkins, Marilyn: "Islamic Glass, a Brief History", Bulletin of the Metropolitan Museum of Glass, Fall 1986, no.32, p.31 or Carboni, Stefano: Glass from Islamic Lands, London, 2001, no.23a, pp.92-3 for example). Many fewer blue glass examples have survived; it is very unusual indeed to be able to offer two in the same sale. The blue colour is very similar to that which is also used for the larger bottle mentioned in the note to the following lot and indicates an Iranian origin.
