The inscription is difficult to read fully. What is clear is:
"bargerefteh(?) nasir al-din muhammad .... be-farsh ..... dola va bar pay (Nasir al-Din Muhammad has lifted .....established upon ....folded carpet).

Two more elaborate but very similar anchor shaped weights were sold in these Rooms, 10 October 2000, lot 318. The footnote to those discussed in greater detail the origin and possible use of these unusual objects, suggesting they were for tethering animals. A third example, very similar to the present example but slightly smaller, sold in these Rooms, 23 April 2002, lot 64. It had an inscription that was read indicating that it was more probable that they were used for tethering the guy-ropes of tents on inhospitable ground. The present example has the same inscription as that most recently sold here, but the inscription is differently written, giving a less sure reading of either, and therefore no clearer indication of their use.
