The inscription reads: al-mulk lillah (sovreignty belongs to God)

The style of calligraphy found here is taken directly from manuscript illumination of the period. The narrow kufic with knotted verticals and bent upper terminals are found in a number of manuscripts dating from the 15th century such as a magnificent frontispiece in the Russian National Library (Loukonine, Vladomir and Ivanov, Anatoli: L'Art persan, Bournemouth, 1995, no.158, pp.165 and 168).
