Lot Essay

The shape of this jug is found most often in metal in the Timurid period. Some thirty examples are known in bronze or brass, almost always inlaid with gold or silver, and sometimes with a handle in the form of a dragon. All date from the second half of the 15th century. This form of jug also appears in jade. Lentz, T.W. and Lowry, G.D.: Timur and the Princely Vision, Los Angeles, 1989, nos. 109-110, p.206 and no.126, p.225. The form probably derives from a Chinese porcelain prototype (Lentz and Lowry op.cit, no.125, p.224) of the Ming period, but here the jug has gained a foot.
