A POST SAFAVID GOLD INLAID STEEL DAGGER (JAMBIYA)
Iran, mid 18th century
The curving double-edged watered steel blade with medial ridge, an upper panel on each side carved and inlaid in gold with an animal combat group, the waisted steel hilt of typical form carved with a variety of nasta'liq inscription cartouches divided by smaller panels with gold grounds, the sides and top with similar motifs, slight loss of gold, one terminal with very slight corrosion

Lot Essay

The inscriptions comprise the bismallah, the nada 'ali quatrain, Qur'an sura lxi, pt.v.13, and invocations to God by repeating His attributes.

A very comparable gold inlaid all-steel jambiya in a Swiss collection was exhibited in 1985 (Treasures of Islam, exhibition catalogue, Geneva, 1985, no.331, p.316). That example included the date which equated to 1770 AD.
