A GHAZNAVID SILVER INLAID WHITE BRONZE LOBED CUP
Afghanistan, 11th/12th century
Of shallow rounded from with eight radiating lobes, a ring handle at one side with pronounced pierced triangular thumbpiece, the sides engraved with four roundels containing four of the signs of the zodiac divided by roundels containing addorsed C-motifs, small areas of scrollwork above and below, most silver now missing, areas of reddish and green patination

Lot Essay

Three of the four signs of the zodiac are Saggitarius, Aquarius and Pisces. The iconography of the fourth is not so clear, although the context makes it probable that it is Capricorn, indicating that this cup had a specific use connected with winter.
