Lot Essay

Excavations of the northern octagonal pavilion at Takht-i Sulayman show there to have been a tile revetment made of similar tiles to the present example forming a dado 6ft. high. A possible reconstruction of the layout was drawn by Rainer Naumann (Komaroff, Linda and Carboni, Stefano: The Legacy of Gengis Khan, exhibition catalogue, New York, 2002, fig.205, p.176). Similar tiles are in various museum collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Komaroff and Carboni, op.cit, fig.204, p.175).
