Lot Essay

A very similar dish from the same collection was sold in these Rooms, 15 October 2002, lot 378. The drawing of the boats in the present dish usefully includes the main mast of each boat which was lacking in the boats of the previous example. For a discussion of the group of ship dishes please see Öney, Gönül: "Iznik Pottery Embracing the High Seas", P, Art and Culture Magazine, Spring 2003, Issue 8, pp.78-91).
