A VERY RARE LAC-BURGAUTE QUATREFOIL MINIATURE BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG FOUR-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN A DOUBLE SQUARE AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

The quatre-lobed box of reddish-brown lacquer, delicately inlaid with iridescent shell, on the flattened top surface of the cover with a deer recumbent beside gold foil lingzhi fungus under a tree growing from rockwork, the sides of the box and cover with an intricate gilt-wire and shell inlaid stylised wave design, the interiors with a single floral spray and the base inscribed with the reign mark enclosed within a gilt-wire square (minor losses)

It is rare to find marked lac-burgaute wares. The present example, as it is of such small size, was probably made to be placed in one of Qianlong's treasure boxes.

Cf. a late Ming, possibly early Qing, lac-burgaute box of similar size, decorated in the same style as the present box, with cell-pattern designs and inlaid with single floral sprays on the interiors of box and cover, that was included in the exhibition Arts From the Scholar's Studio, The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and University of Hong Kong, 1986, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 144.
