It is relatively rare to find oblong hexagonal narcissus basins which are more often of floral, circular or rectangular shape. A similar example, incised with the numeral seven, from the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, is illustrated in Chun Ware of the Sung Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1961, pls. 17 and 17a. It is apparent that these basins were for display purpose as indicated by the Taiwan example which is inscribed with Yangxindian, 'The Hall Cultivating Harmony', and Mingchuangyong, 'For use (on) the Ming window'. Another numbered seven example with a pale blue glaze, was sold in these Rooms, The Jingguantang Collection, 3 November 1996, lot 538.
