Lot Essay

Carved Longquan wares featuring birds, and peacocks in particular, are extremely rare; flower scrolls and to a lesser extent human figures are the more commonly found subjects. However, this guan can be compared to an equally well carved vase from the Russell collection, decorated with four panels enclosing peacocks and peonies, illustrated by Gompertz, Chinese Celadon Wares, London, 1980, pl. 112.
