The scene recalls the celebrated gathering of scholars, namely Shan Tao, Ruan Ji, Ji Kang, Xiang Xiu, Liu Ling, Ruan Xian, and Wang Rong, who were renowned for their literary pursuits. For a similar scene on a carved incense holder illustrated by S. Kwan, Ming and Qing Bamboo, Hong Kong, 2000, p. 346, no. 100. The quality of the carving of the present brushpot is comparable to a brushpot depicting a similar scene of the 'Western Garden', sold in these Rooms, 29 October 2001, lot 532.
