A French parquetry and ormolu mounted bureau plat
By Wassmus Frères, in the Louis XVI style, late 19th Century
Cross-banded with tulipwood with purplewood lines, the lozenge inlaid parquetry top crossbanded with tulipwood of lines of broken outline within a moulded brass edge, the parquetry frieze containing a drawer with central tablet with applied foliate scroll ornament within foliate borders, on fluted tapered legs with foliate collars above, joined by interlaced stretchers with ribbon borders and sabots, stamped 'WASSMUS' on the top edge of the drawers

Lot Essay

Wassmus Frères, Jean-Henri-Chrétien and Jean-Henri-Christophe (fl. during the third quarter of the 19th Century). Of Hanoverian origin, the brothers started business in Paris in 1810.
It achieved prominence under the son of the older brother, Henri-Léonard.
From 1853 they traded at 146 rue de Faubourg-Saint-Denis and supplied furniture to the Crown. They exhibited in 1865 and 1867 working in many revival styles.
