These groups are copied from the sphinxes at the entrance to the Parterre du Midi, Versailles. Designed by Jacque Sarazin, they were the first pieces commissioned for the gardens in 1660, the year of the artist's death. The original marbles were sculpted by Louis Lerambert and Jacques Houzeau, the cupids were later cast in bronze by Ambroise Duval in 1668. The groups were designed to represent religous revelation and philosophical enquiry, revealing the theory that knowledge of the divine can be achieved through the understanding nature.
