The funnel bowl engraved with an oval medallion depicting the half-length portrait in profile of Prince Willem IV, surrounded by the inscription WILLEM KAREL HENRIK FRISO PRINSE VAN ORANYE EN NASSAU, flanked by flower branches, the reverse with military paraphernalia, above a bulbous faceted section enclosing an air bubble, on faceted inverted baluster stem enclosing an elongated air bubble, on conical foot with folded rim

Lot Essay

Prince Willem IV (1711-1751) of Orange Nassau married Anne of Hanover, daughter of King George II of England. He became Stadholder of the United Provinces in 1747. During his very short reign (1747-1751) a large amount of Orangist ware with his effigy was produced.
