The original portrait by Winterhalter was executed in 1854. The Mahararajah Duleep Singh gave up his sovereignty of the Punjab in 1849 and is famed for surrendering the 'Koh-i-noor' diamond, now part of the Crown Jewels. Queen Victoria was very fond of the sitter, impressed by his good maners and rich history. However, Duleep Singh became embittered by his position, calling for a Sikh uprising. Only after a stroke in 1891 did he beg the Queen's pardon which was duly given.
