A LARGE MAHAL CARPET
West Persia, circa 1890
The lemon-yellow field with a lattice of floral lozenges enclosing floral sprays overlaid by a brick-red cusped lozenge medallion with arabesques and delicate floral sprays, the spandrels similar, in a royal blue meandering palmette and vine border between ivory and brick- red floral meander, inner reciprocal Y-pattern and outer plain yellow stripes, a short kilim strip and braided warps at each end, localised wear with minute touches of repiling, a few areas of minor moth damage
