Lot Essay

The PETAG workshop (Persische Teppiche A.G.), a German initiative which produced good quality carpets all signed with three cintamani roundels found in one corner. Lots 49 and 206 in this sale are by the same manufacturer and have the cintamani "signature".

The PETAG workshop frequently used 16th century "classical carpet" designs as a source of inspiration including this directional lozenge "vase" pattern, a similar design of which was sold by the Baltimore Museum of Art (Dimand. M. S./Mailey. J.: Oriental Rugs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1973, fig.103).
