Lot Essay

The inscription translates:
"commissioned by Mir (or possibly Jabar) Khabnaz Khan the 'Arab, 1337.
The 'Arab tribe, which should not be confused with any other peoples with the same name, is a part of the Khamseh tribal Confederacy of Fars (Housego, Jenny: Tribal Rugs, London, 1978, p.16). It is rare to find an inscription on rugs of this origin, making the origin beyond doubt. Most usually associated with rugs of the murgh (bird) design, this is an unusual pictorial rug from this tribe.
