AN EXCEPTIONAL PARAIBA TOURMALINE AND DIAMOND RING

Set with an oval-cut Paraìba tourmaline weighing 8.90 carats in a pavé-set diamond surround, gallery and entwined four-band shoulders, mounted in platinum, ring size 5½

With certificate 0301074 dated 23 January 2003 from the Gübelin Gemmological Laboratory stating that the tourmaline is a Paraìba tourmaline. Also accompanied by an appendix stating that the 8.90 carat "Paraìba" tourmaline described in the above mentioned Gemstone Report, is one of the exceptional rarities. Besides its large size, this extraordinary gemstone possesses a saturated and homogeneous pure blue colour, combined with a very high degree of transparency. A pleasant shape and a finely proportioned cut provide numerous vivid reflections of a vibrant blue colour, and the high purity of the gemstone makes it virtually eye-clean.

The tourmaline group has been famous for many years in the world of gemstones because it hosts a series of well appreciated gems covering virtually the entire spectrum of colours. Towards the end of the eighties, a new dimension was added to this spectacular group of gems, when top-quality faceted stones of colours never before seen in tourmaline began entering the international gem market. Shortly thereafter, it became apparent that these remarkable gems were originating from a newly discovered source known as São José de Batalha, in the north-eastern state of Paraìba, Brazil. These so-called Paraìba Tourmalines immediately became prized for their vivid coloration, which ranged from blue to violet and blue-green through pure green to yellowish green.

The Paraìba state remains the original source of these exclusive gems, however, other deposits of this tourmaline colour variety in the Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil and Nigeria precludes Paraìba's exclusive claim to the sole source of these rarities. A special geological-mineralogical association resulting in a very particular genetic environment is the cause for the formation of this outstanding tourmaline variety. Concentrations of copper and manganese are directly responsible for the bright and intense colours only encountered in the tourmalines from these deposits. Another consequence of the special growth environment is the fact that typically only relatively small gem-quality crystals tend to form.
