Lot Essay

In 1888 Breitner contributed three nudes for an exhibition in Pulchri Studio, The Hague. The art critic Jan Veth praised these daring and masterly painted nudes. In October 1889 Breitner visited the World Fair in Paris where he saw Manet's Olympia. He was very impressed by Manet's famous nude, which at the time was seen as shocking and obscene. It is not known whether the present painting by Breitner was painted before or after he had seen Manet's Olympia, but the model is known (although not by name) from photos Breitner took around 1889. Unlike most painters of Breitner's time, who were much admired for their academically painted nudes with mythological or biblical names, Breitner chose to paint the nude in an unconventional manner. He was the only Dutch painter of his time who engaged himself regularly in the painting of nudes. In this frank and sincere painting the nude is not idealised, but rugged and realistic.
