Lot Essay
Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen was born on 2 January 1794 in The Hague into a well-to-do family. His father owned a book and printshop which was located in the Ridderzaal on the Binnenhof in The Hague. As he grew up Hendrikus showed a talent for drawing. He was fascinated by nature and could often be found in the woods that surrounded The Hague at that time. At the age of fourteen his parents recognised his talents, but in the first quarter of the 19th century it was not easy to find a good teacher in The Hague who could improve the skills of the talented young man. His first teachers were J.Heijmans (1757-after 1810) and S.A. Krausz (1760-1825). In 1819 Hendrikus added his mother's name van de Sande to his surname and as of this date he signed his works with 'H.v.d.S. Bakhuyzen'.
Although Van de Sande Bakhuyzen is best known for his large paintings of cattle and figures in summer landscapes, the present lot, 'Sorting the catch on the beach of Scheveningen', can been seen as a different kind of masterpiece in the oeuvre of the artist. Like many other Dutch romantic artists such as Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870), Petrus Johannes Schotel (1808-1865) and Wijnand Nuyen (1813-1839) (see Lot 19). Van de Sande Bakhuyzen chose the Scheveningen beach various times as the subject mater for his pictures. In this work he depicts the typical daily activities on the beach of the fishing-village Scheveningen at the end of the day. This picturesque scene has been a source of inspiration for many artists from the seventeenth century onwards. Van de Sande Bakhuyzen rendered a detailed impression of the fishing population in the early nineteenth century
Twice Van de Sande Bakhuyzen submitted to the 'Tentoonstelling van Leevende Meesters' a picture with a Scheveningen beachscene, 'Een Scheveningsch Strandgezicht' in 1832 (no. 9) and 'Een strandgezicht te Scheveningen' in 1834 (no. 15). It is difficult to determine whether these can be identified as the present lot.
