Lot Essay

This work from 1953 shows the influence Paul Klee had on Gaitonde, both in terms of the use of line and color as well as the overall artistic sensibility. "Through cluster-studies of motifs, he returns to the same subject or format, playing its variations, opening it out till he has exhausted it to his personal satisfaction. These motifs take off from natural objects, landscape, primitive and calligraphic signs. (Pria Karunakar, 'V.S. Gaitonde', Lalit Kala Contemporary 19 & 20, 1975, p. 17.)
