E.H. Pinto suggests in Treen and other wooden bygones, London, 1969, p. 181, that the type of tall coffee grinder (on the right of the illustration) dates from early in the 18th century.

Comprising: three various coffee-grinders, each with ring-turned decoration, one with acorn finial, the others with ring-turned baluster finial, one with top section of finial replaced, together with a master salt with ring-turned spreading foot, the two larger grinders with steel turning-handle
