The splat derives from a pattern for a parlour chair in Robert Manwaring's Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion, 1765, pl. 9.

A GEORGE III MAHOGANY CORNER CHAIR
The curved rounded toprail with raised centre with C-scroll voluted ends above a pair of pierced interlaced splats with stylised flowerheads and ogee-headed flutes flanked by Tuscan columns, the drop-in seat covered in 18th century floral cross-stitch needlework woven with trailing flowers on a yellow ground, above a waved moulded seat-rail and on scroll-headed cabriole legs and pad feet, the needlework probably associated, two ears replaced, the front-left leg re-supported to the inside of the seat-rail with a metal bracket
