A BABYLONIAN INSCRIBED CREAM STONE DOOR SOCKET
CIRCA 2100-1900 B.C.
The rectangular block with central depression for door pole, inscribed in Sumerian cuneiform on one edge, 6 + 1 lines reading: "Nur-Kakka, beloved high priest of Nin-isina, set up two matching doors and the beam of the Pahum gate"
9 5/8 x 8½ x 3 in. (24.5 x 21.5 x 7.5 cm.)

Lot Essay

This is a rare example to be inscribed with the name of the high priest, it would normally be reserved for the name of the ruler. The Pahum gate is likely to have been a gate in the temple of Nin-isina (the patron goddess of the town of Isin) which may explain the occurance on this example of the high priest's name.
