AN EAST ROMAN CORNELIAN INTAGLIO WITH MYTHICAL BEASTS
2ND-3RD CENTURY A.D.
With figures of two composite serpent-like animals standing upright on their hind legs, one with a bull's head and the other with ram's head, each with star above, with five further stars at the sides, both animals bending over a table under which stands a lion, table laden with Mithraic symbols, 1.3 x 1 cm.; 1.8 cm. across inner hoop; and a Roman cornelian intaglio with the confronting heads of the Dioscuroi, Castor and Pollux, each with a star above, 2nd-3rd Century A.D., 1.5 x 1.4 cm.; 1.4 cm. across inner hoop, both in later ring settings (2)
