Lot Essay

Cf. C. C. Vermeule, Sculpture in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, 1977, p. 5, no. 7 for similar cinerarium with the lid of a different clay to the base. The scene is said to represent part of the Athenian-Persian battle of 490 B.C.
