AN ATTIC RED-FIGURE COLUMN KRATER, ATTRIBUTED TO THE HEPHAISTOS PAINTER
CIRCA 450-425 B.C.
Side A: central figure of a naked youth setting out, cloak over his shoulders and spear in his left hand, moving to the left with head turned back towards Athena, standing with spear and wreath in her raised hand, Nike (Victory) opposite holding out a garland
Side B: three standing himation clad youths, the outside pair each with staff
Bud chain around rim and neck, palmettes above the handles, double row of dots on rim overhang, rays above the foot
14 7/8 in. (37.8 cm.) high
