TWO OLD BABYLONIAN CUNEIFORM CLAY TABLETS
CIRCA 1900-1700 B.C.
One tablet with 40 lines of text consists of a letter concerning the price of barley, both the sender and the recipient were involved in growing and selling this crop, part of the text reading "... Now, I have sent Nurshu-eli to you. Let him tell you that they are registering things for you. The food is too expensive, so that I am buying it for 1/3 shekel of silver. But when they are trading it they fully dispose of it for you at 1/3 shekel of silver and it is like the food of orphan girls, which you eat all round the year! I have harrowed a third of a gur of land in my estate ...", reverse worn and chipped; and another tablet, 37 lines of text concerning a money lender and an outstanding loan, part of the text reading "... Please, when you see this tablet of mine take half a mina of silver, and the interest on it for three years, namely 1/3 of a mina and 9 shekels of silver ... If you do not hand over the silver I shall make some other colleague take over your enterprise and will bring you into contempt. Do not say I did not write to you.", chip to lower left-hand corner and surface damage
