A HELLENISTIC BLACK GLAZED RELIEF AMPHORA
CIRCA 3RD-2ND CENTURY B.C.
The footed vessel with flaring rim flanked by twin vertical handles, a moulded frieze of running dogs and figures around the body, acanthus leaves and tendrils above the foot, sgraffito wavy lines around the shoulder, the base with a seven-petalled rosette in relief, 9 3/8 in. (23.8 cm.) high; a South Italian black glazed guttus, the central tondo with a bearded satyr's head moulded in relief, vertical grooves around the shoulder, ridges around the spout and rim, with single loop handle, 3½ in. (9 cm.) high; and a Gnathia ware black glazed pelike, a woman's head in profile on one side, with scrolling plant tendrils in front, details in added red, white and yellow, 9½ in. (24.1 cm.) high, both 4th Century B.C. (3)
