Lot Essay

Samuel Russell was granted two patents for improvements in stereoscope, number 1044 of 4 July 1862 and 3429 of 23 December 1862. Both appear to describe stereoscopes similar to this one with the latter featuring some improvements. The stereoscope was designed also to hold stereocards.
The stereoscope features neither in Wing nor in the Madden collection.
