See Oliver Impey, Japanese Export Porcelain, Catalogue of the Collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford,, Amsterdam, 2002, p. 179, no. 279 for a similar example. The author states that a large quantity of undecorated porcelain was exported to Europe to be enamelled there and, in the case of 'gallipots', the name of the medicine could be added later according to its usage.
