Lot Essay

Rostrevor lies on the northern shores of Carlingford Lough between Warrenpoint and Kilkeel, at the foot of the Mountains of Mourne. Rostrevor was birthplace of Robert Ross, the celebrated General who captured Washington in 1814 after unexpectedly defeating the Americans at Bladensburg. Nicholl has painted the distant topography with detailed accuracy, showing on the horizon the granite obelisk erected in the centre of the town, in memory of Major General Robert Ross.
